This is for those that want to better understand how to properly respond to posts.
Be glad to, Stephen.
First, breaking up the post helps to keep the context of a discussion. When you hit quote, notice the first code that is above what you are seeing, which, I will use this post to illustrate.
When I hit "QUOTE" and what I call the Quote Box came up, this is what appeared:
(QUOTE=stephen)
This is going to be an odd request, but would you instruct me on how to highlight part of a post and then comment on that, and then highlight another part of the post and comment on that, all in my same post (response). I would appreciate this very much, then I would like to respond. Thanks.(/QUOTE)
The code that makes the quote is the first thing before what you said...
(QUOTE=stephen)
I have changed the code by changing the brackets [...code...] to parenthesis (...code...) so it doesn't function.
There are two ways to break up the post to quote each individual portion and respond to it. The first is to use the QUOTE function which is at the top of the box and looks like a cartoon caption with word on it (if you scroll your cursor over it and leave it you will be given the function of each icon, this one will say "wrap (quote) tags around selected text," or, you can use the code that I have presented above:
(QUOTE=stephen)
Now to "select" a text, you will need to use your mouse, placing the cursor just after whatever it is that you want to select, then push down and hold the left-click button, and then scroll over what you want to select. When the portion of the text you want to select is highlighted, then right-click and a box of functions will appear and you want to left click on "COPY." You can also push CTRL and C to copy (CTRL and V to paste).
So what you want to do is scroll the cursor over...
(QUOTE=stephen)
...until it is highlighted, then right-click, then select COPY.
That is the first step.
Next, you break up your post. Now that the code is copied, simply go through and break it up, and I will illustrate:
The original post looked like this when I hit QUOTE:
(QUOTE=stephen)
This is going to be an odd request, but would you instruct me on how to highlight part of a post and then comment on that, and then highlight another part of the post and comment on that, all in my same post (response). I would appreciate this very much, then I would like to respond. Thanks. (/QUOTE)
The first thing I do is copy the Quote Code...(QUOTE=stephen)...and then start breaking it up. As I go, I will place the code before each statement I want to respond to, and I do this by placing my cursor where I want to place the code, then I left-click to bring the control box up, which will have "PASTE" in it. When you left-click PASTE it will paste whatever it is you have just copied in that spot. This can also be achieved by holding CTRL and V:
(QUOTE=stephen)
This is going to be an odd request,
(QUOTE=stephen)
but would you instruct me on how to highlight part of a post and then comment on that,
(QUOTE=stephen)
and then highlight another part of the post and comment on that, all in my same post (response).
(QUOTE=stephen)
I would appreciate this very much, then I would like to respond. Thanks.(/QUOTE)
Once I have broken it up, now I need to place the quote code at the end of the quote which looks like this (and keep in mind I have changed the brackets to parenthesis to keep it from functioning)...
(/QUOTE)
So after I have broken it up above, I copy the ...(/QUOTE)...and then go back up and place this code at the end of each segment, so when it is done it will look like this:
(QUOTE=stephen)
This is going to be an odd request,
(/QUOTE)
(QUOTE=stephen)
but would you instruct me on how to highlight part of a post and then comment on that,
(/QUOTE)
(QUOTE=stephen)
and then highlight another part of the post and comment on that, all in my same post (response).
(/QUOTE)
(QUOTE=stephen)
I would appreciate this very much, then I would like to respond. Thanks.(/QUOTE)
Now it is ready to be responded to, so I then go back and put in my responses:
(QUOTE=stephen)
This is going to be an odd request,
(/QUOTE)
Not an odd request, I had to ask someone myself at one point, and it is just my opinion that a detailed response is the best form of response. Some will object to this, but I can still not figure out how detailed response makes thing harder, lol.
I view it as common courtesy, and it helps keep confusion to a minimum.
(QUOTE=stephen)
but would you instruct me on how to highlight part of a post and then comment on that,
(/QUOTE)
You asked how to highlight, so this might be more than you asked for, but I like to help anyone I can, especially...if they are going to be responding to my posts, lol.
(QUOTE=stephen)
and then highlight another part of the post and comment on that, all in my same post (response).
(/QUOTE)
If you mean emphasizing the text, you will use the cursor, scroll across the text you want to select and once it is highlighted you can just right-click on the function prompt such as I (italics), B (bold), and U (underline). And of course quote, which will do the same thing we just did, without giving the poster's name and the prompt that directs you to the post it came from.
(QUOTE=stephen)
I would appreciate this very much, then I would like to respond. Thanks.(/QUOTE)
I look forward to the response, this is a topic I feel is important in understanding our faith and Scripture itself. It is important to understand exactly what Christ came to give to us, rather than see a general pattern that runs through redemptive history.
Okay, now that I have broken up the post, responded to it, as I go I might want to emphasize something I have said (it is generally bad form to change anything the other poster has said, even emphasis, in my opinion, so I feel it best to leave what they have said identical to how it was originally posted).
And again, all you do to take advantage of the prompts we have available to us is to highlight using the mouse to scroll across text we want to select while holding down the left-click button, then either right-click to being up the control box and right-clicking on "Copy" or by holding CTRL and C simultaneously. Then left-click on the prompt you want to take advantage of, and to illustrate what it should look like...

Above I have placed part of my response in italics, and did this by highlighting it and left-clicking on "I" (which is right under "Fonts above). Again, I have changed the code, as you would not see it if I left it in brackets.
Okay, you may already know some or much of this, but I would rather just go ahead and try to cover all the bases. If you have any questions or I didn't do a very good job of explaining, just let me know.
Good practice in response is, in my opinion, something we should all do. Writing within another's statements is also bad form, and can lead to confusion as to who said what. And let's face it, when we challenge each other's doctrine there is already enough potential for upsetting someone, so it is best to keep to a minimum anything that might cause our antagonist to think we are trying to be offensive, rather than sincerely desirous to discuss the Doctrine of the Bible, and our beliefs based on the Doctrine.
Hope that helps.
